conventions of soaps

In our first lesson, the topic was a discussion on soaps and their conventions and how they affect the public. Firstly we were told to wirte down all of the soaps that we could think of, here are some of the ones we came up with.
  • Eastenders
  • Coronation street
  • Hollyoaks
  • Home + Away
  • Emerdale
  • Neighbours
  • Doctors
  • Casualty
All of these soaps are very successful in their distinct way. the reason these are all so successful is that they all have similar conventions. And this was our next task, to discuss conventions that make a successful soap opera then to jot them down. Here's some that we came up with as a class.
  • Romance
  • Murder
  • Cliff hangers
  • Relationships
  • Family dramas
We then got told to write a short paragraph on our opinion of soaps and why we think they are so popular. Here is my opinion. 'Personally i dont like or watch soaps because i dont find them socially entertaining, but i also believe that their role in society is to entertain the public with a realistic approach to world we live in'.

Eastenders

further on within the lesson we were asked to watch a short clip on Eastenders progressively writing down key points that make a soap so successful. Here are some of the things i wrote down.
  •  Repetition on previous happenings (so we can catch up)
  • reality put into perspective and by this i mean that, scenarios that could potentially happen within the world we're living in happen right in front of your eyes.
  • exciting constant story lines
